The mission of the Sandestin Foundation for Kids is to create a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of children. This foundation focuses on supporting causes and organizations that make the greatest difference, particularly in areas such as health and economic well-being. Additionally, the Sandestin Foundation for Kids collaborates with various groups, including The Billfish Foundation, to further enhance its outreach. Founded in 2011 by the Becnel Family, owners of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, the foundation is guided by a Board of Trustees. Its supporters are individuals who are passionate about helping children in need, many of whom have a special connection to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, including guests, homeowners, club members, employees, and business partners. The foundation also aligns its efforts with initiatives promoted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
The Billfish Foundation (TBF) works globally to promote the conservation of billfish and related species, supporting healthier oceans and stronger coastal economies. Collaborating with organizations like the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Sandestin Foundation for Kids, TBF advocates for sustainable practices that benefit both marine life and local communities.
In a world with nearly seven billion people, effective conservation requires strategies that are forward-looking and adaptable. By considering the ecological roles of billfish alongside their interactions with humans, TBF designs campaigns capable of addressing both emerging challenges and long-standing issues faced by resource managers.
TBF implements a proactive, multi-faceted approach that includes biological and socio-economic research, education, and advocacy. Because billfish and other highly migratory species cross international boundaries, these strategies also account for cultural and legal differences across nations. Backed by a globally diverse network of supporters, The Billfish Foundation is uniquely positioned to meet these challenges and advance the sustainable management of these remarkable species.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (FLDEP) Clean Marina Program is a voluntary initiative that fosters proactive environmental stewardship. Participating marinas, such as Baytowne Marina at Sandestin, receive valuable guidance and on-site technical support to implement best management practices. This initiative aligns with the mission of organizations like the Sandestin Foundation for Kids and The Billfish Foundation, which also emphasize environmental responsibility.
To achieve Clean Marina designation, facilities must adopt a series of environmental measures aimed at protecting Florida’s waterways. These essential measures focus on critical issues, including safeguarding sensitive habitats, managing waste effectively, controlling stormwater, preventing spills, and preparing for emergencies. Designated marinas further benefit from ongoing technical support through the Florida Clean Marina Program and the Clean Boating Partnership.
